"Though a fictional tale, the resilience and strength of characters inspired my own."
– Jacob Coyne
Stories allow us to experience emotion in a safe space, helping us process trauma or work through difficult feelings. By identifying with complex characters, we develop empathy and a deeper understanding of human nature, which translates to healthier, real-life connections.
For many facing mental health challenges, fiction is an escape from problems they can't control. It gives them reprieve to step away from anxious thoughts or sadness, even if just for a short time. The stories they read stay with them, characters becoming friends who provide comfort. For some, this temporary escape is what gets them through each day.
Personally, fiction has been a lifeline in my own journey with depression and anxiety. The world’s stories created gave me hope that I too could overcome and find purpose. Though a fictional tale, the resilience and strength of characters inspired my own. Their hardships made my struggles feel less isolating. Fiction fosters connection in the unlikeliest of ways. Overall, stories impact well-being by helping us better understand ourselves and others. They teach us that no one is alone in facing life's trials.
